After Terminator: Genisys bombed domestically and was savaged by critics, Paramount is apparently unsure about more movies. The film drew only $81 million in the USA, by far the most important market. It fared somewhat better internationally, with an additional $196 million. However, the production companies will probably take in less than half of this total.
With the Chinese release yet to appear it appears Paramount will take a wait and see approach. A source tells THR: “We will definitely need to see the holds globally to confirm that people like the film.”
As the rights revert to James Cameron in 2019, the plan was to squeeze two movies back-to-back to get them done in time – the quality or writing was probably going to be expendable oncemore. But that may no longer be a viable option anymore. Don’t expect a decision either way until later in the year.
In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if they never mention ‘sequel’ again, and even the above source wasn’t official.
