‘The Predator’ Slated For IMAX Release

This might interest a few.

Collider is reporting that 20th Century Fox is prepping Shane Black’s upcoming ‘The Predator‘ for an IMAX release, alongside Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel and the studio’s untitled Marvel film.

According to the report,

“The release notes that these films will be “digitally re-mastered into the immersive IMAX format,” so unfortunately it sounds like there are no plans for any native IMAX photography at this stage.

Fox and IMAX recently partnered up for the release of Deadpool, which was re-mastered into the format and performed swimmingly. One imagines the big-screen nature of IMAX will suit these four tentpoles well, and there’s much to look forward to about each one.

Black intends to make The Predator a big event film, and releasing it in IMAX is certainly a step in that direction.”

That’s a good thing, IMAX is a big format and usually reserved for ‘event films’ such as Star Wars or (unfortunately, give or take) every single Marvel/DC/Nolan film being touted today.

Before pitchforks are raised, though, let it be known that there were previous R-rated event movies such as PrometheusThe Equalizer, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, and Deadpool released in the format, most of which worked toward the films’ benefits. Personally I prefer IMAX 2D above everything else, Revenant and the re-release of Raiders of the Lost Ark being two of the best theater experiences I’ve had in the format.

In any case, I hope this one’s good.

The Predator is directed by Black with a script by Black and Fred Dekker, and is rumored to star Sicario‘s Benicio Del Toro. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s involvement has yet to be confirmed.
