If you grew up rewinding VHS tapes, you should be very fond of this man. Brilliant character actor J.T. Walsh was a 1990’s staple, many movies would not have been the same without him. He enters the Manly Movie Hall of Fame!
I’ll tell you, nobody played a villain like J.T. fuckin’ Walsh.
You can have your heroes, the good guys who become box office stars. But what use is it if they don’t have a sneering villain to bounce off of? Behind every protagonist, there’s a great antagonist. Walsh may have been typecast to a degree, but would you have had him any other way?
Remember him in Breakdown, for example. Gosh, what a fucking villain. So good, that you’d almost root for him. I also like the fact that Walsh wasn’t afraid to play a coward either. If needed to, he could easily play that sneering, snivelling cowardly bitch (see Narrow Margin). And this made him all the better! Real manly actors don’t give a shit if they look weak.
I was going to do a top five J.T. Walsh breakdown but realized, man, I have to admit there are a few of his movies I haven’t seen. Suggestions?
Raise a glass for this legend.
