Wonder Woman came out recently. To rave reviews and 92% of Rotten Tomatoes (I’m sure that was a completely unbiased series of reviews). However, Jim Cameron is not a fan of the praise the film is getting:
“All of the self-congratulatory back-patting Hollywood’s been doing over Wonder Woman has been so misguided. She’s an objectified icon, and it’s just male Hollywood doing the same old thing! I’m not saying I didn’t like the movie but, to me, it’s a step backwards. Sarah Connor was not a beauty icon. She was strong, she was troubled, she was a terrible mother, and she earned the respect of the audience through pure grit. And to me, [the benefit of characters like Sarah] is so obvious. I mean, half the audience is female!”
I don’t necessarily agree with all that he says here, but I would highlight ‘she was troubled’. Although I haven’t seen ‘Wonder Woman’, I’d bet that the character is unerring and that for a woman to have ‘troubles’ would be ‘sexist’, nowadays.
I’m aware that it’s a comic movie with ‘super’ heroes, but for Batman look at both Christian Bale and Michael Keaton… troubled! Especially the latter. Also, the woman interviewing Cameron appears to be a feminist who really doesn’t like him.
