Everyone is talking about Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League, but for my money this is the real project of his to keep an eye on. Above is the trailer for Army of the Dead. The film stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Garret Dillahunt, Raúl Castillo, Omari Hardwick, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tig Notaro and Matthias Schweighöfer.
Synopsis: Following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.
Key ingredients seem to be here: Zombies crossed with a heist, a director who actually made a good remake of Dawn of the Dead, a good cast and a strong budget. This movie isn’t a sequel to Dawn of the Dead, although it was originally touted as one when it was announced in 2008, but then again even George Romero’s movies were not direct sequels to one another.
Likely that it’s set in the same universe as the 2004 movie, around the same time, with both apparently taking place during the initial zombie outbreaks. The only thing I find curious about this movie is the motivation to steal cash, which would essentially be useless in the apocalypse. Then again, since this takes place in the early stages in one area, they may not yet appreciate such a problem.
The movie is released on May 21st on Netflix.
