We’ve heard about how Kirk Douglas almost ruined Rambo, or at least tried to in a bizarre diva-driven act of chutzpah. His odd idea to kill Rambo and drive off wearing his bandanna was shown the door by Sylvester Stallone.
As for who was to play Rambo himself, we know quite a few were lined up besides Stallone, but funnily enough Burt Reynolds was on that list. Reynolds turned the movie down, foreseeing a terrible franchise/premise that should be avoided at all costs. And when Reynolds heard that his pal Stallone was going to do it, so strongly was Reynolds’ worry that he invited Stallone over to his house to advise him to turn down this horrible movie, just like he did. As Stallone said once to Total Film:
“I was at Burt Reynolds’ house having dinner and he said to me ‘… even if the movie dies and you’re good in it, it doesn’t matter’. I said to him, ‘Burt, that’s about the worst piece of advice anyone has ever given me, but thanks anyway’”.
Incidentally, Burt Reynolds would go on to star in Raven. A movie that sort of ‘visits’ Rambo 2 and Broken Arrow? Still better than capeshit!
