The remake of William Lustig’s cult classic Maniac Cop seems to have been on the back burner for some time, but new developments have emerged and the film will apparently begin shooting in Los Angeles this summer.
As previously reported on Manly Movie, John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning and Universal Soldier: Regeneration) is set to direct, with Nicolas Winding Refn of all people onboard as a producer, together with series creator William Lustig. Lustig also produced the 2012 remake of his other (ahem) cult classic, Maniac, which I personally thought was pretty good and actually improved considerably on the original. I’d be a bit more skeptical about a Maniac Cop remake, since the original, along with it’s sequel Maniac Cop 2 (the third one I don’t think I ever saw) are actually pretty good. Maniac Cop gave Bruce Campell an early non-Evil Dead starring role. He then handed over the police-baton to the inimitable Robert Davi in the second one. But with Hyams directing, I think we could be in for a treat with this.
