Top Five: Heist Movies

4) Heist (2001)

heist

The Score, with Robert De Niro and Edward Norton was a good heist movie in 2001. But a better one came out that year, ‘Heist’ with Gene Hackman and Danny DeVito. From the off, Hackman – and this is no surprise – convinces completely as a professional thief. All thats needed is a good story. And Heist delivers not only as a heist movie but as a competent thriller.

It’s intricate without being needlessly convoluted and although it’s set in 2001, it doesn’t rely on techno gimmicks. It’s an old veteran beating the system the oldschool way. Actually, there were three heist movies in 2001, Oceans 11 was the other one. This, again, is superior. Whereas Clooney was some suave dick with women issues, Hackman is the stern pro all about the loot (By contrast, De Niro a bit too stern in the score, playing himself again). There are few distractions here. One of Hackmans best latter era movies. Doesn’t disappoint.
