Top Five: Heist Movies

1) Die Hard (1988)

You could almost forget that Die Hard, probably the manliest movie of all time or even the best movie of all time, is in fact, a good old fashioned robbery flick. In fact the 2nd sequel is too, so are numerous Die Hard clones and a lot of them are so good even as ripoffs. But in the interest of diversity I left those out and left the daddy of them all for no.1. The Germans are out to steal some shit in a skyscraper and McClane fucks it up. As well as being a heist movie it doubles up as a purebred action movie.

Some heist movies are too slick (Oceans 11). Some too action packed. Some too over-written. But Die Hard is a mutant, it’s all of these things successfully combined into one brilliant masterpiece.  It was still 1988, but Die Hard introduced a level of maturity to things, even Stallone may have been tempted to cheese this up had he gotten it. It was slick without over extending itself and it was (and is) unrivalled in its delivery of action. And this is only a review of it as a heist movie. As an action movie it is even more untouchable. This defeats anything Mann offered. Arguably, it defeats anything Cameron offered. Peerless.
