Top Five: Buddy Cop Movies

2) 48 Hrs (1982)

Brutal violence, first Buddy Cop movie of the ’80s, black humor… that you, Walter Hill? Of course it is. I dunno who came up with the idea of casting Eddie Murphy in this, or who caught Nolte’s potential comedic cynicism, but the end result is borderline genius. This is a special movie, firstly, it’s Eddie’s debut. Secondly, it is the debut of a particular 80’s calling card – Jim Horner’s steel drum score. When you hear that shit, someone is about to get shot. Funny, David Patrick Kelly of Commando’s ‘Sully’ fame appears, even Sonny Landham is in this.

Like I mentioned in Red Heat, there’s a particular signature of coldness/brutality that is unique to Hill (it is even more present in Another 48 Hours) and it is most definitely here, unmistakeable. And it’s funny as fuck. It’s also a special movie because it help set the trend for movies like it throughout the 80’s.
