Top Five: Buddy Cop Movies
5) Red Heat (1988)
Gimmick on top of a gimmick in this movie and Schwarzenegger’s only venture into the Buddy Cop deal, if you don’t count Last Action Hero. With the Cold War thaw they thought it would be a good idea to have a Red cop team up with an American cop. This is a weak Schwarzenegger movie but a strong Belushi movie. There’s a brutal vibe to this that is easily recognisable as Walter Hill, the first of two of his movies on this list. The buddy cop deal is a Walter Hill special, he’s at it again with Bullet to the Head in 2013. While the two do have chemistry, it never really gets up there with the likes of Glover/Gibson. It never really established itself and couldn’t break through to classic territory. But like I always say, an average Arnie movie is usually a good movie in general.
