9th Company (2005)
A lesser known war movie is 9th Company, performing somewhat better than the previously mentioned movie among ‘critic’ circles.
This may have been the biggest Russian movie ever produced, it’s certainly one of them. It was produced during the ’00s, when Russia decided to get her shit together again and shake off the USSR hangover. Maybe making a big movie about Afghanistan was symbolic of their recovery and confrontation of demons, somewhat like the American cinema industry’s love/hate affair with Vietnam.
To be fair, it’s not a brilliant movie. But it’s certainly not too well known and probably the best movie you’ll find on the Soviet misadventure in Afghanistan. It wasn’t released in the USA until 2010. Good hardware porn in here, you’ll see weapons systems in this movie that simply aren’t going to show up in a western movie.
