2) That whole school massacre… thing
By season six, many were questioning Kurt Sutter’s merit as a writer of on screen violent drama. The ratings for his show were dropping. What do you do? Up the ante! In season six, both men and women were raped, the drug use rose, the gun toting trebled and a man was drowned in his own piss.
But even worse, Sutter decided that some kids needed to be massacred at school. This was (conceived) around the time of the Sandy Hook massacre, and Sutter, well, let’s just give him the benefit of the doubt and say he had ‘bad timing’.
The season had a deranged kid enter a school and gun down as many of his fellow classmates as possible. Not even teenagers, we’re talking probably around 10. The whole thing prompted uproar, but what was laughable about such a scandal? Well as usual, the way Sutter wrote and handled the whole thing. It’s one of those things where you can barely tell what is an attempt as serious commentary or deeply disturbed black humour. It was at once odd, brazen and creepy.
Fuckin’ awful stuff, and yet I couldn’t resist.
