I wonder how many people who read ManlyMovie are going to go 4k. Or probably a better question, will you go 4k soon?
Up until now I have dismissed the format as too unwieldy to switch just yet, with not enough material and a fear of early adoption leaving you up obsolete creek too soon. But the whole thing seems to be picking up pace. It’s not like there’s a tsunami of 4k Blu-Ray movies coming out, but the first manly movies are starting to show up.
Sicario is one, Mad Max: Fury Road is another. The Revenant and Creed are also being readied. Looking backwards, Independence Day and Ghostbusters (yes, the old movie!) are also expected.
I would say I’m ready to jump. And a couple of things are influencing my decision. First, I hear Sony is preparing to launch a 4k PS4, I will buy that sucker day one. Second, I’m an AV-phile and usually upgrade early. Another thing is that I’ve never left Blu-Ray, I won’t accept my favourite movies in anything less than full bitrate 1080p, so I’m definitely counting the days until I can see Heat on a 100gb disc.
I think 3D is finished, maybe. Solely on my own experience, I have not bought very many 3D movies at all, in fact I don’t even know what I’ve done with those glasses. But 4k is a different matter. One other thing is that 4k is, temporarily at least, going to keep the home video market afloat. I don’t know about you, but phone line is just not going to be able to handle that kind of stuff satisfactorily.
Now all I need is a new fuckin’ TV…
