4) Showdown In Little Tokyo (1991)
In a perfect world Dolph Lundgren and Brandon Lee should’ve taken up the mantle of manly movies in the ’90s. Alas, the leftist rot that set in began to show with this movie. Or more accurately, the studio abandoning it. The initial cut was deemed too violent and gruesome. Cuts were made and the theatrical run was all but killed, I hope they were pissed afterwards, because it made a killing in VHS rentals. Proof that people still wanted ’80s style action. You just gotta love how Lundgren gets shot in the heart, kills the man who did it, then walks off into the night laughing and joking with his buddies.
It did wake the studio up though to the potential of Lee and Lundgren. Dolph got chosen for Universal Soldier, his best role, and Lee got even more backing. Lee had so many offers waiting, including what was eventually to exist as Die Hard With a Vengeance and (some say) Mortal Kombat. And as for Dolph, finally a movie that shows what the big guy is capable of in martial arts. A competent director shoots him pulling Van Damme style moves, full extensions and all.
