1) Universal Soldier (1992)
Here’s more show stealing from Dolph. It took me a while to realise it, but Dolph is without question the main attraction and upstages Van Damme. The guy is just funny (“I’m all ears…”) in a way that his previous movies didn’t allow him to show. I’m not sure what happened to his career after this and why it didn’t take off like Van Damme’s. If I recall, the censors tore up his follow up movie (Joshua Tree) beyond all recognition too. Damn them all to hell, recruiting Lundgren as a potential successor to Arnold/Stallone was the only way to win this fucking war!
But anyway, ol’ Dolph plays a man (or walking corpse) in this movie I can sympathise with. He doesn’t suffer traitors lightly and is bent on drawing the Vietnam War to its proper conclusion – even if he’s two decades too late. Or in the wrong Country. And he feeds his men raw meat and is partial to the occasional CC of ‘roids. One problem though, the fight scene is a classic but it should’ve been an all-time classic. And the reason it isn’t is because Dolph’s martial arts skills are not on full display. I wonder, would a certain Van Damme ego have anything to do with that?
I mean, shit. Maybe Dolph should’ve rightfully been in the movies Van Damme appeared in eventually.
