Beverly Hills Cop 2 (1987)
I know what you’re thinking. Axel F. theme. Yes, that’s in there. But Harold Falterymeyer’s Beverly Hills Cop 2 soundtrack was more accomplished than even that. This is a slice 1980s action perfection… Bad Guys, the theme from the opening heist sequence.
The above is not the real deal and actually a cover version, but it’s close enough. The problem is that the instrumental film version has never been released, so the real thing can only be found with vocals. Which is a pity.
Definitely the best Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack, somewhat better than the first and, well, significantly better than the third.
Another 48 Hrs (1990)
James Horner proved himself not only as a fine musical composer but one who deeply understands this genre. When you hear those steel drums working you know that shit is about to get hard-R real.
From his ‘steel drums’ series (such as this, 48 Hrs and Commando), I think this version is his best work in that regard. This is cold stuff from a cold and cool as hell movie, directed by Walter Hill.
Pity we never got that third movie…
