Sylvester Stallone was a victim of the changing landscape of manly action movies in the 1990’s, along with his peers Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal etc. One-armed M-60s and helicopter kicks were out, The Matrix was in.
Stallone struggled, and tried to change tact.
He made the mistake of going the comedy route. Worse, he mixes it with gangsterism, these are two formats we know have terrible track records for Stallone. As well as being critically torn up, the film was a box excoriated at the box office… the $17 million budget didn’t even return $1 million.
Maybe it was the fart jokes that people just didn’t get into…
