36) DRIVEN
By the end of the 1990’s, Sylvester Stallone’s career was cooking down, with the (unfair) response to Get Carter worsening things. But it wasn’t until Driven bombed that it really hit the skids.
This film probably deserves an entire article all of its own. This passion project of Stallone’s was dusted off, Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger) was recruited, and a significant budget of over $75 million (some say $95 million) was called on. At the time, Stallone actually acknowledged his career ‘dry spell’ (you won’t get too many big actors do that) and had hyped Driven as a modern-day Rocky.
Even as a teenager I knew this was a rickety aspiration.
Maybe the biggest problem here is the subject matter. While Formula One is a monstrous sport, it is still in many ways very niche, and it would take a bold man to try and make a workable movie around it. Especially since it’s not even F1 in this movie, and Stallone agonized the script through 25 drafts.
If that isn’t the biggest problem, maybe it’s that it’s just kind of boring. A bit of a drag. Forgettable. Others were less enthusiastic, noted car buff Jay Leno savaged it as the ‘worst car movie ever made’.
