5) COBRA (1986)
Cobra came about, so it is said, after Stallone turned down Beverly Hills Cop, noticed how good that film turned out to be, then eagerly tried to do something similar by himself.
Cobra should not work as a film.
It should be one of those ‘off-season’ Stallone movies, which is sandwiched in between the next Rocky/Rambo outings. It is on paper, B-rate stuff, with a flimsy script. In fact, what script? Brian Thompson once said he trained as a thespian and was somewhat bewildered when he showed up on the set of Cobra, to find that Stallone and others barely even looked at the script… it sort of sat around collecting dust.
But sometimes, this is how to get shit done!
Cobra is a bona fide manly classic. You think you can come up with competitive one liners for the 1980’s with some silly ‘script’? No way! Cobra is driving by excellent action, scenes of blades being sharpened and Jean Beauvoir-powered montages!
Hell, you’d even have to suggest that this movie is manlier than Beverly Hills Cop…
