2) ROCKY IV (1985)

Rocky IV probably epitomizes both the 1980’s and manly movies more than any other at once.  It was a harsh turn of direction for the series, a one-off actually — things went back to ground in the follow up movie and have stayed that way since.

But the figures aren’t going to lie.

It’s the second most profitable Sylvester Stallone movie ever, according to Wikipedia, pulling in 300.4 million from a 28 million budget.  While The Expendables 3 is said to be the highest grossing with 315 million, that movie had a 100 million budget.

Anyway, the best type of excess is 1980’s excess.  But not just because of the music montages, but also the insane workouts and outright steroid abuse right there on the screen.  Also, Rocky Balboa ended the Cold War.

Or did he?  The rivalry between he and Ivan continues later this year!
